Where do we start?
With such a comprehensive subject, knowing where to start can be difficult. Online security comes in many layers, and having many layers is important. Just having a “virus checker” isn't enough in this day and age, and as we travel on this journey, we will look at anti-virus software, because that’s an important level of protection. But, it’s not the only one. Let me explain using personal experience.
Many years ago, we bought a house and moved into an area that was safe and reputable, where the neighbors knew and looked after each other. So much so, that the day we moved in, even though we didn’t know them, they were waiting to help us carry our furniture into the house! It might sound a little creepy to some, but we made many good friends in our little neighborhood. But, as time moved along and the neighbors slowly moved out, the area changed dramatically. We were used to just locking our door, and then going wherever we wanted to.
One afternoon, my wife came home after picking the kids up to find our back door broken, and many of our valuable stolen. The kids were terrified, our sense of security had been violated, and our trust of the surrounding area was gone. I personally would not be able to describe the feelings of shock, and anger that I held for many weeks after. But one thing that it did trigger was the need to make sure that this wouldn’t happen again, and if someone tried, it would be as difficult as possible.
We purchased and installed a CCTV security system that could be monitored remotely. Then followed that with a multi-point burglar alarm, monitored by a security company. Then came a dog, and a car that we don’t use much is always sitting in our driveway so that it looks like someone is home. There are other little things that we have done to ensure the safety of our house, but I’m sure that you see the point that I’m trying to make. The thought that just locking the door, or just having a “virus checker” is no longer enough. You need to look at what you do and see how secure it is – or isn't.
So where do we start? By changing the way, we think. Like my locked door, a single level of protection isn’t enough. Hackers look for holes or entry points. You should too.
Let's take the next step and see how we can tighten things up. For home, and for business. After all, working from home is becoming more popular.
